چکیده

This paper describes a bioinspired preprocessing and coding system devised for producing optimal multi-electrode stimulation at the cortical level, starting from image sequences and working at video rates. A hybrid platform with software and recon4gurable hardware delivers a continuously varying stream of pulses or spike patterns. The main objective of this work is to build a portable system for a visual neuro-prosthesis to stimulate e6ciently an array of intra-cortical implanted microelectrodes. A set of parameters can be adjusted in the processing and spike-coding modules to trade-o7 their technology constraints with the biological plausibility of their functional features. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Cortical Activity Influences Geniculocortical Spike Efficacy in the Macaque Monkey

Thalamocortical communication is a dynamic process influenced by both presynaptic and postsynaptic mechanisms. In this study, we recorded single-unit responses from cortical neurons that received direct input from the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) to address the question of whether prior patterns of cortical activity affect the ability of LGN inputs to drive cortical responses. By examining ...

Fast-Reset of Pacemaking and Theta-Frequency Resonance Patterns in Cerebellar Golgi Cells: Simulations of their Impact In Vivo

The Golgi cells are inhibitory interneurons of the cerebellar granular layer, which respond to afferent stimulation in vivo with a burst-pause sequence interrupting their irregular background low-frequency firing (Vos et al., 1999a. Eur. J. Neurosci. 11, 2621-2634). However, Golgi cells in vitro are regular pacemakers (Forti et al., 2006. J. Physiol. 574, 711-729), raising the question how thei...

Effects of Cortical and Peripheral Electrical Stimulation on Brain Activity in Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain

Purpose: Neuroscience studies suggest that Chronic Low Back Pain (CLBP) is associated with central sensitization, and maladaptive reorganization of the brain; this introduced a new target for LBP treatment. Studies revealed that cortical and peripheral electrical stimulation can be beneficial in regulating brain neuronal activity. However, there is a scarcity of evidence to support the effects ...

High-frequency EEG covaries with spike burst patterns detected in cortical neurons.

Invasive microelectrode recordings measure neuronal spikes, which are commonly considered inaccessible through standard surface electroencephalogram (EEG). Yet high-frequency EEG potentials (hf-EEG, f > 400 Hz) found in somatosensory evoked potentials of primates may reflect the mean population spike responses of coactivated cortical neurons. Since cortical responses to electrical nerve stimula...

Refractoriness Accounts for Variable Spike Burst Responses in Somatosensory Cortex

Neurons in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) respond to peripheral stimulation with synchronized bursts of spikes, which lock to the macroscopic 600-Hz EEG waves. The mechanism of burst generation and synchronization in S1 is not yet understood. Using models of single-neuron responses fitted to unit recordings from macaque monkeys, we show that these synchronized bursts are the consequence ...
